Participation
The board is graded on a weekly basis, and your overall discussion board
grade is an average of the individual grades you receive for the board worth 10% on the final grade for this course. Each week’s grade represents activity in the current lesson’s threads only.
Each lesson contains two or three prompts that are connected to that lesson’s
learning outcomes. In addition to responding to these prompts, you should
engage in the board by initiating posts and responding to the posts of others in
ways that advance the conversation. You might, for instance:
• Post an opinion based on reading/research you do on the topic.
• Respond thoughtfully to a topic from your own experience.
• Provide links and resources related to the topic that would be of interest
to other participants.
• Pose a thought-provoking question related to the topic.
• Collect multiple perspectives on a topic or provide an alternate
perspective to the one currently dominating the discussion.
• Thoughtfully rebut another participant’s comments.
• Synthesize the current class discussion by summing up arguments or
discussion points.

  1. "LAU students elections", I've been hearing about this the whole past week. But what I heard, wasn't really pleasant. Regardless of the advantages of drawing students election at the university as a motivation for students to improve the environment of the university, however, these elections had caused serious troubles between different parties and candidates. I'm not really aware of the process that the election intales, since this is my first semester at LAU. But if I run to elections, my campaign would include improving the university in many ways. For instance, I would work on improving the cafeteria's performance, organize the university's parking lot, facilitate
registration processes and rules, draw educational workshops monthly, let students from differents majros to interact and so much more.

  2. Elections is an important event in LAU . Every year this event describes students opinion and give them chance to vote for persons who can present the university. In addition to that it describes student's freedom and shed the light on democracy.Elections have a simple process since each faculty has a candidate, business above ,business below, arts above and arts below and other faculty.these elections are made in order to get a student council that consists of 15 student where each one have his own demands to improve the university. Some wants to improve the music club ,others want to improve the cafeteria and others want to increase smoking areas. And for me i would like to decrease the cost of the parking of LAU and decrease the fees for students.Elections in LAU are similar to american elections since each student have the right to vote for one person and not a group of people.Friday november 9 is day where we should enjoy,so vote to the person that you see he fits to be in such council.

  3. Tomorrow seems to be an important day for every member of the LAU community but frankly , i think the advertising for this day was not like i expected it to be . I do not know anything about the elections, how we are supposed to elect and who are we electing for what. i didn't hear anything about campaigns made by the candidates and promises given. It may be my fault by not searching enough informations on this symbolic day but i also think that the candidates didn't show enough attention to their elections.
Everything i heard was voting for parties because of sectarianism.
On the other hand LAU elections are somehow similar to the US presidential elections. It is based on the same concept that the candidates that get the majority votes wins the election.

    1. At the begining, I didn't know anything about elections, but now, after watching the election process, I formed an idea and I knew how we do elect, and that each faculty has its own candidates.

  4. So tomorrow is a big day. Candidates wanting to get elected by bribing the voters with their promises, and claiming that they are eligible to represent the students. What I really think of LAU's student elections is that it is complete, and excuse my harsh attitude, utter nonsense. I say that because the students have turned the elections into a popularity contest and a sectarian one, for politics in Lebanon has affected my fellow colleagues. I find no interest in the elections nor the candidates' promises, and it is because that I have chosen not to. For you see, these so called representatives of ours are more interested in winning than actually providing the students with what they deserve. Numerous attempts have been made by the candidates to convince the students to vote for them. There is nothing wrong with producing a well informed campaign, but I speak of the ones that use other methods of convincing. For example, a fellow colleague came up to me today and asked if I was going to vote for the specific political sect that he belonged to, which put me in an awkward situation. Also, my sister being a student at LAU, was offered some course notes in exchange for her vote. Their methods are of pure bribery and deception. They become your best friend for the day, they even throw you the occasional compliment as they expect something in return. Ironic isn't it? They try their best to convince the students to vote for them while they are actually giving the students reasons not to.

  5. As a new student at LAU, I don't know a lot about elections and what happens in details. However, I heard that some candidates from different parties present their programs in which they announce their plans. In addition, they pledge to realize all the students demands like improving the university gym and cafeteria, adding more clubs, encouraging the coordination between students and admisnistration, guiding new students...
LAU elections are considered similar to the US elections since it shows how different opinions are respected, and the civilized way in which the elections are being achieved.

    1. I don't think condidate's speechs were taken in consideration by all the students because all they care about is politics. and i've heard that last year, the two vs groups had a fight so the different opinions are not respected at all

  6. This is my first year as a student at LAU so i'm not very familiar about what goes on the day of the elections. However, during break time today,i overheard a few students talking about last year's elections and apparently a good number of fights took place. It's sad to hear that something happening for the benefit of the students would have such a bad outcome.Rumors say the situation at university became so incontrolable on elections day last year that many students won't be attending classes tomorrow.I wonder how the candidates feel right before elections day,it's very interesting how those joining the elections have always some sort of "political" background. One of my friends introduced me to one of the candidates last week , she was making sure he was going to vote for her by treating him so kindly and giving him compliments.A few days before that,i overheard that same girl making fun of that friend of mine.Surely, she makes a great politician!

  8. What I know about the whole Student Council Elections is that in each major (Business, Arts&Sciences, Architecture&Design…), there are several candidates that represent different political campaigns. These candidates must have completed around 60 credits and don’t have any warnings or disciplinary probations in order to participate in these elections. They promise students that they will help them to get financial aid, reduce tuition…
I am against all of this because I find it ridiculous that candidates are being voted based on their political preferences. LAU shouldn’t be encouraging this because students are taking the elections too seriously and creating problems in a violent way, which was shown on TV. I think this kind of atmosphere is unacceptable; there should be no differences and everyone must be united.
There are several ways in which this kind of elections is similar to a presidential elections such as the one that the US recently witnessed. For example, only LAU students can vote for Student Council and only American citizens can vote in the United States. In addition, candidates both have goals they would want to achieve and have their own political campaign. Also, we find in both, guidelines like security measures, ballot building, accessibility…

  10. Friday November 9, Elections day, as i understood from the emails I've been receiving from The Dean Of Students Dr. Raed Mohsen. The stories about LAU elections that i heard created in me a huge concern. Why you might ask? Well, The different political sectors that rule the country in our days are the greatest obstacle that faces our country, and having the up coming generation divided into those same misleading sectors that poison the Lebanese society is totally unacceptable. I want US to take a stand, refrain from voting to anyone who calls for a specific political sector, stop this infection that reached every Lebanese mind, sectarianism is found in every community and no body is trying to abolish it. Let us start, lets us show how we educated thinkers know whats good for our country, let us be a motivational example for our fellow Lebanese citizens. This way we might wake up to live in a purified Lebanese society. Taking things at face value i think that the LAU elections are a perfect copy of our Lebanese example(they are not in any way similar to that of The US elections other than that of the voting procedure) as of procedure, campaigning strategies, and sadly unreachable goals. Each political group delegates a candidate which is given a specific speech to read or essay to post containing many promises which most likely wont be attainable, and expects to reach the chair. The CHAIR which is the concern of the candidates not students and their problems. Unfortunately, another representation of the Lebanese society is the fight that happens between different groups after elections. At last, hoping the elections would go smoothly this year.

    1. I agree with the fact that politics in Lebanon have affected the new generations, and how LAU's elections is a perfect example. I also claim that we should take a stand and only vote for the candidates that would actually make a difference.

  11. I honestly don't know a lot about the process of student council elections here at LAU. All I know about elections in general is that students get elected based on their campaigns and the promises they offer us. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that here in lau, atleast that's what I heard. I read the objectives that the candidates wish to fulfill and I believe that they could do much better than this, such as working on expanding the LAU campus since LAU gets too crowded sometimes. And finally, as Jamal said, students do turn LAU into a popularity contest.

    1. I agree with what you said, because in the end students will only vote for the one who shares their political opinions, so none of them really care about condidates promises.

  12. Tomorow the day of so called "elections" is the highlight of many conversations this week. For all I know election day is a fraud day. Its a "be my friend for one day" day. Our politicians dont know the true meaning of elections, they barely get it right, I dont think bias student will even have it in sight. To look at the bright side, candidates sure do promise alot in return for a vote. More student rights, better services etc... I have never seen a promise met. I hope that this year might be different I hope the people we pledge power to, reflect responsibilty and leadership back upon us. As a student and a citizen, a good campaign echoes out a better future for the coming generation. I would leave you with this statement: the power is embedded with us and is given by us.

  13. Lau elections are held every year it expresses new ideas and thoughts for making lau better place for the students and to improve their education. The main goalof elections is to help student of diffrent parties work together and forget what thier beliefs are or what thier religion is and live the best years of thier life at lau.Candidates promise to fullfill the demand of the students and help them with the obstacles that they might face. They promise students to help them and deliver their ideas and problem to the dean of students. This is my first year and i heard from students that elections are to impove our environment but how can we improve our environment if we always look for each others religions or parties we follow .I think that the right election is one thats done away from paries so that student socialize with each other and express thier opinion

  14. Every year, the elections in most universities across lebanon give birth to a new fight and a new division. And we have witnessed several fights in the previous years. I personally had my sister locked inside lau for more than 3 hours last year because of the "Elections struggle". To vote or not, ur free to do so.. But to threaten students lives is not a way of expressing ur self rather a symbol of democracy. Candidates should improve lots of things that students demand. So why do political parties interfere? I simply agree that politicians are affecting the youths of today leading them to more and more hatred among each other.. Elections here in LAU are slightly different than those in america. Here we have dozens of opposite parties. While in america, there are 2 parties representing 2 presidents. And according to the demands a candidate is urging for in our campaign, well, I didn't hear about any of them in the past few days. All what I heard was the name of the candidate and to which political party he belongs to. Besides, I might vote and I might not. I'm free to do so. But I'm sure ill vote for someone who deserves regardless of the differences between our beliefs.

  15. Honestly, I do not know anything about the elections, how we are supposed to elect and who we should elects and for what, it's my second year in the university and i still don't know cause it doesn't mean to me anything. As i see, every year, the elections in most universities are the reasons of a new fight so i hope the elections would go smoothly this year.

  16. Student council elections here at LAU has been the talk of all students attending it. This event highly sheads light on personal thinking and opinion. Choosing a represantative with a promising and a credible plan permits all students to express their ideas and needs. Aiming a democratic and a fair organization, candidates have to make sure they base their decisions on students' voice. Now that it's over and votes have been counted, students have chosen what they think best serves a satisfying united society.

  17. LAU witnessed student election last Friday, thankfully that day ended safely. The election happened in a civilized way without any fights and troubles as the last semester, thanks to the security that LAU provided, but one thing bothered me and it is people going around and asking to vote for a certain candidate, they do not have any right to do that, it is a matter of personal point of view no one should interfere in others privacy. I did not vote for a certain political point of view, but my vote was to support my friend at the first place. Unfortunately some students preferred their political point of views on their own friend. Politics should not affect our decision anymore.

  18. The day of choosing the student's representatives is an important event where students express their opinions by voting for their candidates. The representatives transfer the ideas to the president of the university. All candidates promise to improve the life on campus through an electoral program. Some candidates focus on enhancing social life at LAU while others are concerned with improving the discipline through a more developed curriculum. Due to political tensions through a couple of years, unfortunately each campaign is oriented politically. The candidates are no more concerned with the corrective actions on campus but rather interested in expressing political opinions.

  19. Each year, in every university of Lebanon, there's this special day called ''The Elections Day''. From the first day of my college day, all I hear about is elections day, it's a huge event for LAU. Before the elections, every condidate of each school ( Business, arts%science, Architecture&design) annouce a campaign where they talk about their plans, what his/her willing to do to create a better campus. However, I don't think students really care about what the condidates will say because in the end they will only vote for the one who has their same political opinion. Some of us take this election thing very serious, they even might get into fights if they loose, while others decide not to vote to be more comfortable,so they prefer to be in peace with everyone.

  20. The SRC election is based on the idea of giving the students the right to vote for their representatives. However it became a matter of a political clash between two parties. In a democratic election we would have several candidates that would try to persuade the electorates to vote for them through delivering a speech such as the recent election that took place in USA between Obama and Romney where they both delivered speeches to convince the people to vote for them. On the other hand LAU SRC elections is based on the political struggle of two parties 14 and 8 where the speeches and promises of the candidates are not taken into consideration instead they vote based on the party they belong to. The purpose of the elections has deviated from being for a democratic purpose to a political and religious purpose.
